Brief Description Tropical Cyclone Information Statement
Detailed Description The next information statement will be issued by 9:00 p.m. ADT. For Hurricane Erin. 1. Summary of basic information at 3:00 p.m. ADT. Location: 35.7 North 70.4 West. About 468 kilometres east of Cape Hatteras. Maximum sustained winds: 148 kilometres per hour. Present movement: northeast at 30 kilometres per hour. Minimum central pressure: 952 millibars. 2. Public weather impacts and warnings summary. The Canadian Hurricane Center is closely monitoring the progress of Hurricane Erin. Erin is expected to remain far offshore of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland Friday and Saturday. The most likely impacts will be dangerous surf along Atlantic coastlines of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and the potential for some gusty winds over coastal areas of southwestern Nova Scotia. a. Wind. No wind impacts expected, but gusts up to 70 km/h are possible along exposed areas of the southwestern coast of Nova Scotia on Friday and southern Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland on Saturday. b. Rainfall. No rainfall impacts expected. c. Surge/Waves. Dangerous surf is expected along the south-facing Atlantic coastlines of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland Friday and Saturday. The main impact to the public will be from the large ocean swell with associated surf and rip currents - of particular risk along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia Friday. The highest water levels along the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia are expected to occur with the high tide on Friday evening. 3. Marine weather impacts and warnings summary. Gale to storm force winds are in effect for most waters adjacent to and south of Nova Scotia, while Hurricane force wind warnings are in effect for southern slope waters. Gale to storm force winds are expected for southern Newfoundland marine waters Friday night into Saturday. Maximum seas over the southern offshore waters could be as high as 8 to 11 meters, with breaking wave heights of 3 to 5 metres along the coasts of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
